The Assessment Process

Understanding Through Assessment

A diagnostic assessment can help you better understand how you or your child thinks, learns, communicates and experiences the world. It can provide clarity around areas of concern and help identify suitable supports at home, at school, at work and in everyday life.

Our assessment process is respectful, thorough and tailored to the individual. We bring together relevant information from the person being assessed, their family and, where appropriate, other professionals involved in their care or education.

Diagnostic Assessments We Offer

Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment

An autism assessment explores social communication, patterns of behaviour, sensory experiences and developmental history. The process considers the person’s individual strengths and support needs across different areas of life.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Assessment

An ADHD assessment explores attention, concentration, organisation, impulsivity and activity levels. It considers how these experiences may affect learning, work, relationships and daily life.

Intellectual and Cognitive Assessment

A cognitive assessment helps build a clearer picture of thinking and learning abilities. It may explore areas such as reasoning, memory, processing and problem-solving to identify strengths and areas where additional support may be helpful.

Specific Learning Disorder Assessment

A Specific Learning Disorder assessment explores persistent difficulties with learning skills such as reading, written expression or mathematics. This may include assessment for dyslexia or dyscalculia, depending on the person’s needs and areas of concern.

What the Assessment Process May Include

Every assessment is planned around the individual. Depending on the reason for referral, age and assessment type, the process may include →

The exact process and appointments required will be explained before the assessment begins.

An intake interview with the individual and/or their parent or caregiver.

Academic testing.

Questionnaires completed by the individual, family members, teachers or other relevant people.

Liaison with therapists, teachers or other professionals, with consent.

A cognitive assessment, where required.

Review of relevant reports, referrals and background information.

Your Report and Recommendations

Following the assessment, you will receive a formal report from the Clinical Psychologist. The report will explain the assessment findings and include recommendations tailored to the person’s needs.

Where appropriate, these recommendations may help guide therapy, educational or workplace supports, future referrals, access to Connect’s services or an application for external support.
