The National Disability Insurance Scheme (also called the NDIS) is the new way of providing support to Australians with a disability, their families and carers. The NDIS will provide all Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to enjoy an ordinary life. The NDIS will help people with disability achieve their goals, including independence, community involvement, education, employment and health and wellbeing. As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life. The NDIS also provides people with disability, their families and carers with information and referrals to existing support services in the community.
People with disability have the same right as other Australians to decide their best interests and to have choice and control over their lives. The NDIS recognises that everyone’s needs and goals are different. The NDIS provides people with individualised support and the flexibility to manage their supports to help them achieve their goals and enjoy an ordinary life. The NDIS replaces a disability system that was unfair and inefficient with a new, national system that is world-leading, equitable and sustainable. This provides certainty and consistency for people with disability, their families and carers. Australians will now have peace of mind that if their child or loved one is born with or acquires a significant disability that is likely to be with them for life, they will get the support they need when they need it.

Finding what Adam needs: Julie’s story
I volunteer where I can at the school and, you know, really have an attitude to giving back as much as I can because I feel like everything goes in circles and you just don’t know what you’re going to need in the future. ‘Come and have something to eat’ Our family consists of Kevin and myself, and we have four children. So, Curtis Owen Adam and Eliza. Adam was born in 2011. He ended up being booked in for a C-section and we had no prior knowledge that he was going to be born with Down Syndrome. He just takes a little bit more thought process. And how do we keep him engaged? The reality is you can’t be there all the time as much as we’d like to be. So, I guess that as a mum, you try and do it all for your kids. But acknowledging also that you do have physios, speech therapists and other professionals around you that you just cannot do it all. So, if they weren’t available, how would I be able to meet the needs of what Adam has had? The NDIA has really allowed us to keep engaging with all four of our children. At different pockets in time, which has been critical. There’s lots of opportunities out there and you might need to do things a little bit differently or it might take a bit longer, but you will get there.
